gloomy easter sunday Howard Chaykin has a reputation for drawing sexy women in his comic books and from what I saw of his most recent work in Hawkgirl, I have to agree with that statement with one small exception. The title character was sporting some scary teeth in his first issue and I don't remember that being true of the women in his American Flagg work. To be fair, it has been many years since I read that work so I can't say if they looked the same then or not. What I do know is that Kendra in Hawkgirl bared what could have been seen as fangs almost every time that she spoke. I found it to be distracting and wished that he could have done something less sinister with her mouth. Before I read the issue, I had made the decision to drop the book from my monthly reading list. The last issues concerning the Rann Thanagar War hadn't really captured my attention so I didn't think that I would miss the book. I stuck with this decision even though I knew that Walter Simonson would be writing the book. His run on Thor years ago is still a favorite of mine, but I had a stronger attachment to the thunder god than I ever did for Hawkgirl. Reading this issue didn't change my mind despite the fact that Kendra wore fishnet stockings through most of it. Keeping a title on my list just because of the art is never a good policy to follow. Pretty pictures may be nice, but a weak story almost always negates the power of the images. Besides with the lag in my subscription, I still have two more issues coming my way if I don't think that I gave the book enough of a chance. Another title in my monthly stack that had both strong art and a good story would be the latest issue of The Outsiders. The newly reconfigured team is in Mali doing some serious political work. What was even stronger was the Infinite Crisis Special The OMAC Project leading into the new Checkmate title. Greg Rucka has quickly moved into my list of favorite writers working in the medium today with his emphasis on espionage. Sasha Bordeaux is a great character and am happy to see Amanda Waller back from the ashes of the Suicide Squad. As far as I am concerned the first issue can't be released fast enough. I truly want to know what happens next to Sasha and Beatriz. |
