crescent versus cross

In my world of DVD viewing, I left behind the realm of low budget science fiction with a heavy quotient of sex appeal for something a little more cerebral because I like that kind of contrast. A year or so ago I remember seeing advertisements in the pages of The New Yorker for a program called The Crusades: The Crescent & the Cross being shown on The History Channel. At the time it looked interesting, but since I do not have cable seeing it would have required someone else to make a copy for me so I didn't give it that much thought and completely forgot about it. Then recently I stumbled across it in the Netflix library and immediately added the two discs to my queue.

Now having seen both the two part documentary and the bonus disc, I can say that I liked it, but I do have to agree with some of the reviews that I read. It has a very pro Muslim slant to it, which is fine I suppose. This leaning comes across when they mention all of the incidents of killing that the Christian soldiers did in their quest to regain Jerusalem. Naturally in any conflict between opposing points of view there is going to be death and questionable acts of violence, but the program painted the Christians as being far more bloodthirsty than the innocent Muslims. Personally I think that both sides did their fair share of killing justified or not.
