state rivalry Downloaded the Sleepy Hollow trailer this morning while I ate breakfast. It is good to see Tim Burton doing something again with Johnny Depp. I haven't been to the theater in over a month now, so I am trying to get back into the habit. Next week Friday is the opening of Eyes Wide Shut, then after that I'll probably go to see The Haunting the following week. A brochure for hotels in Illinois came in the mail today and I thought that that was a little odd. Illinois is not what I think of as a vacation spot. Chicago is good for a day long visit with the Art Institute and so on, but I can't really think of what else I would want to see in Illinois. Actually the whole sequence from Ferris Bueller's Day Off gives you a pretty good idea of what can be done in Chicago in the span of a day. Personally I feel that most people in Illinois come to Wisconsin for a vacation, which can be seen by all of the out of state cars on the highways in summer. My opinion of Illinois may be a little cruel, but I have heard far more insults about Wisconsin coming from people who live in Illinois. For some reason unknown to me there exists a strange rivalry between Wisconsin and Illinois which may or may not stem from football. For example, there are some people from Wisconsin who give insultng nicknames to people who come from Illinois. A popular one is flatlanders and an even less flattering one would be fibs, which is an acronym for fucking Illinois bastards. On the other side of the fence, people from Illinois love to use the term cheesehead for people who come from Wisconsin. Sigh. I cringe whenever I see one of those foam cheese wedge hats on someone on television. Why do people buy those things and then wear them in public? Why? Milwaukee has a hard enough time trying to shake the national image that they got from Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley and that was almost two decades ago. I know that this image still exists, because when I told someone in Canada that I was from Milwaukee, they mentioned Laverne and Shirley. Of course they quickly followed that up by saying that it was probably nothing like the television show and I felt a little better. Personally I always wondered why Laverne had a New York accent when she was from Milwaukee. Then I looked over the brochure some more and I saw that they mentioned being close to certain shopping centers and J Crew was included in this list. It was at that point that I figured out why I got the brochure. I like to shop at the J Crew outlet store near the Wisconsin Illinois border and must have gotten on some kind of mailing list because of it.
